Paediatric Inpatient

Gertrude’s Children Hospital is a 24-hour hospital fully equipped with Seven Wards which patients are admitted into.

Jean Ward (Executive Ward)
The ward has ten single self-contained rooms with an en-suite bathroom for each room. The room has a cot for the patient and a bed for the parent. Children of any age can be admitted. The parent’s meals are included in the room charges.

Executive ward facilities include:

  • Child’s cot/bed with all bed head services e.g. Oxygen, suction and nurse call with each bed.
  • En-suite bathroom including baby’s toilet seat and bath tub.
  • Mother’s bed and facilities (including tea and coffee making facilities, occasional chair, large wardrobe and hand basin complete with soap dispenser and hand towels.
  • A la carte menu is availed on request
  • Drinking water dispenser.

Edna Ward (New born baby Ward)

This caters mainly for newborns and very small children. This ward has a cot or incubator in a private room, a bed for the parent and a wash basin, Rest and shower rooms are shared. Parents pay for their own meals separately. There is a TV in every room.

Felicity Ward (5 – 18 Month Infant Ward)

This ward normally caters for all children and teen upto 21yrs. This ward has private rooms containing a cot for the baby, a bed for the parent and a wash basin and TV, rest and shower rooms are shared. Parents pay for their meals separately.

Surgical Ward

Normally for surgical and other related cases. This ward has private rooms with a TV, cot for the child, a bed for the parent and a wash basin, 4 of the rooms are duplex, there are 3 private rooms which are ensuite, 4 rooms are burns unites with individual toilets and bathroom. The rest of the rooms share a toilet and bathroom. Parents pay for their meals separately.

Jacaranda Ward

Normally for surgical and other related cases. This ward has private rooms with a cot for the child, a bed for the parent and a wash basin, rest and shower rooms are shared. Parents pay for their meals separately. Each room has their own TV.

George Drew Ward

Normally for surgical and other related cases. This ward is a semi open ward with professionally partitioned rooms with a cot for the child, bed for the parent or a very comfortable couch for the parent, rest and shower rooms are shared. Parents pay for their meals separately. Each partitioned room also has a TV.

Susan Ward (Open Ward)

This is a semi open ward with professionally partitioned rooms with a cot for the child and a bed or a comfortable couch for the parent. Rest and shower rooms are shared. There is one isolation room. This ward caters for self-paying parents.

Paediatric Critical Care Unit plus High Dependency Unit

This is where critically ill children who need ventilation support are admitted. It is an 8-bed facility with 8 ventilators. The step down to high dependency unit is done in the same unit.

There is a lounge for parents to sit during the day, however parents are encouraged to go home and get some rest at night or they can be accommodated in self-contained apartments in the Muthaiga campus at a cost.

Operating Theaters 

Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital has three operating rooms, 2 major and 1 minor. It can operate on children from age 0day to 21 years.

It has two post-anaesthesia beds and six recovery beds. Patient are normally transferred to a ward bed of their choice after they are fully awake.
