Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital radiology department provides a wide range of imaging services using appropriate equipment and processes that meet children, teens and adults’ unique needs.

The services offered include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), X-ray, ultrasound, computerised tomography (CT) scans, dental imaging including orthopantomograms (OPG) inta-oral-periapical imaging, bitewings, and temporomandibular joint x-rays. The department also provides Transracial Doppler Imaging and angiography services.

The department performs and interprets more than 10,000 examinations per year with state-of-the-art imaging equipments.The radiology unit ensures the highest quality and safety of patients, families, and staff

Where do you offer the MRI scan?

The scan is done our main hospital in Muthaiga (Radiology department/unit).

What are your operating hours?

6:30am to 8:00pm Sunday to Sunday.

Is the MRI scan noisy?

The MRI scanner will make loud tapping noises at certain times, this is normal. Headphones are provided for your comfort.

Is the MRI scan done by a registered professional?

Yes, all our scans are done by trained and competent professionals.

Does the MRI emit radiation?

MRI scan is free of ionizing radiation

Is the MRI dangerous to me or my child?

An MRI scan is a painless and safe procedure. However, If you or your child might have metal in their body please ensure to inform the attending staff.

How long will a scan take?

1 hour. It takes 2 hours to send the report to the doctor

What if my child wishes to use the toilet during a scan?

Encourage the child to use the toilet before the scan. We provide clean toilet facilities.

How much is the MRI?

A scan is 19,800/= without sedation and Kshs 45,000/= if sedation is indicated.

Will my insurance pay for the MRI?

Yes, most insurers pay for the service subject to preauthorization and approval.

Do you take NHIF/SHIF?

Yes, subject to preauthorization and approval.

Admission & Eligibility

At Gertrude’s Hospital, a children’s facility, only patients who are below 18 years old are eligible for admission as inpatients. Admission is only based on a child’s medical needs at the time they are being admitted.

Once admitted, the patients are placed under the care of an appropriate and experienced private consultant.

Casualty

This admission follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case and the doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.

Satellite Clinics

This admission almost follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case. But in this case, the patients visits one of the Gertrude’s Hospital’s Satellite Clinics and the doctor from the clinic feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.

The patient is referred to the satellite clinic and transport is organised to take the patient to Gertrude’s Main Hospital. A bed is prepared to make the admission smooth.

Emergency

This admission does not follow the normal procedure in an Emergency case and the patient is very serious and doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation, the patient is admitted directly to the ward or ICU depending on the status of the patient.
