Dr. Karimi is a resident paediatric haematologist oncologist at the Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital (GCH) since 2018 when she completed her training from Jimma University, which had external rotations six months to the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India (Oncology) and 2months to the Mount Sinai Hospital, Maryland (USA). At GCH, she runs the inpatient and outpatient haematology/ oncology services as well as pre- and post- bone marrow transplant follow up. She manages both haematological and solid tumors for example acute leukemia, non-Hodgkins and Hodgkins lymphoma, wilms tumor, neuroblastomas, sarcomas, germ cell tumors and other rarer tumors. She runs a daycare oncology service where chemotherapy is administered on an outpatient basis. She is part of the multidisciplinary team taking care of childhood cancer patients and their families at GCH. Dr. Karimi also manages children with blood disorders in GCH with sickle cell disease (SCD) being an area of special interest to her. SCD is the most common haemoglobinopathy with an estimated 10,000 new cases born every year in Kenya. She is running a comprehensive care service for children with SCD at GCH that encompasses management of acute complications and the screening of chronic complications of the disease. She is an investigator in several multi-site, international clinical trials for patients with SCD. The other haematological diseases manages include but are not limited to the following: nutritional anemia, inherited bone marrow failure syndromes, autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune thrombocytopenia. Dr. Karimi carries a Masters in Global Child Health and is currently involved in advocacy activities as part of the outreach team in GCH and on a national level with the relevant professional bodies to increase access to care for children with blood disorders and cancer in Kenya and the region. She has an interest in health systems design and strengthening to deliver quality care to patients.

Admission & Eligibility
At Gertrude’s Hospital, a children’s facility, only patients who are below 18 years old are eligible for admission as inpatients. Admission is only based on a child’s medical needs at the time they are being admitted.
Once admitted, the patients are placed under the care of an appropriate and experienced private consultant.
Casualty
This admission follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case and the doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
Satellite Clinics
This admission almost follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case. But in this case, the patients visits one of the Gertrude’s Hospital’s Satellite Clinics and the doctor from the clinic feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
The patient is referred to the satellite clinic and transport is organised to take the patient to Gertrude’s Main Hospital. A bed is prepared to make the admission smooth.
Emergency
This admission does not follow the normal procedure in an Emergency case and the patient is very serious and doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation, the patient is admitted directly to the ward or ICU depending on the status of the patient.
