What is a cardiac specialist clinic, and what services do you offer?

A cardiac specialist clinic is a medical facility that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and cardiovascular diseases. We offer a wide range of services, including diagnostic testing, medication management, and interventional procedures.

What types of heart conditions do you treat in your clinic?

We treat a variety of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, valve disease, and congenital heart defects. Our team of cardiac specialists is highly trained in the latest diagnostic and treatment techniques to provide the best possible care for our patients.

How do I know if I need to see a cardiac specialist?

If you have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations, you may need to see a cardiac specialist. Additionally, if you have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, you may be at increased risk for heart disease and should consider seeing a cardiac specialist for preventative care.

What types of diagnostic testing do you offer, and how are they performed?

We offer a variety of diagnostic tests, including electrocardiograms (ECGs), echocardiograms, stress tests, and cardiac catheterization. These tests are non-invasive or minimally invasive and can be performed on an outpatient basis. Our team of cardiac specialists will work with you to determine which tests are necessary for your specific condition.

What are my treatment options if I have a heart condition?

Treatment options will depend on the specific heart condition and its severity. Treatment options may include medication management, lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, or interventional procedures, such as angioplasty or cardiac surgery. Our team of cardiac specialists will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your individual needs and goals.

Dr. Martin is a resident Paediatric Cardiologist at The Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital (GCH) since 2020 following completion of Fellowship training in India though has been at the facility since 2009 having joined as a Medical officer and underwent post graduate and subspeciality training while associated with our facility. At GCH, he currently runs cardiac specialist care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The outpatient reviews involve weekly clinics where new patients referred from any of our outpatient clinics, as well as external referrals from different hospitals and private clinics/practitioners, are reviewed having presented with various cardiac symptoms. The clinic also serves various follow up patients from this screening process as well as post discharge patients managed for various related conditions including post cardiac surgery. Many of his post cardiac surgery patients were indeed operated on at our facility by our multidisciplinary teams and continue to receive care as necessary for their various post op status. He does also follow up external cases managed at other facilities or on return after seeking care abroad. Inpatient services include reviews of patients with incidental or overt symptoms suggestive of cardiac disease or involvement for patients with various medical or surgical conditions being attended to in our facility. He manages a broad range of cases with our medical teams including sick neonates, septic patients, patients with severe respiratory symptoms, acute myocarditis/ cardiomyopathy, kawasaki’s disease, acute rheumatic fever, acute heart failure. And also carries out pre-op cardiac screening where indicated for other surgical disciplines. We have an active cardiac surgical program that started in 2014 and has since had consistent growth since then. Dr Martin does cardiac screening involving examination and imaging, assessing all congenital cardiac structural lesions which are then discussed with the broader cardiac team involving fellow cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists and intensivist. He then plans and preps the patients for heart surgery, carries out post op intensive care with the intensive care team to the point of discharge with a follow up plan for long term care. We have been in collaboration with an external cardiac team to build technical capacity in our facility that has borne fruit seeing us do more complex cases with good results. Our past cases have included repair of Atrial septal defects, Ventricular septal defects, Tetralogy of fallot, Cor triatrium, Coarctation of the aorta, AV canal defects, Rheumatic valve repair and replacement and more recently Common arterial trunk repair. Palliative cases have involved Pulmonary artery banding, Glenn shunts and BTT shunts. Dr Martin has a particular interest in less invasive interventions for congenital structural heart disease and as part of our facility’s future plans we have Catheterization lab facilities currently under development.
