Gertrude’s Children’s hospital has nineteen pharmacies throughout its network that provide high quality pharmacy services including paediatric pharmaceutical products as part of patient care.
Age-appropriate Medicines for Children
Over many years now the pharmacy department has defined a hospital formulary list that includes carefully selected medicines, nutritional products, and other non-pharmaceutical products that meet the hospitals rigorous evaluation process to be used for patient care. The hospital works with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, manufacturers and suppliers of pharmaceuticals to ensure the products used at the hospital meet all the requisite requirements for quality, safety and efficacy for use in children.

What we do for you

  • Reviewing your medications before dispensing and working with your doctors to achieve the best possible outcome for your child
  • Taking the time to help you understand the medication your child is taking: What it is, how does it work and what to expect
  • Determining and Dispensing the most suitable medication form for you and in some cases designing and preparing an individual mixture or powder (Extemporaneous Formulation), especially for the youngest of our patients
  • We are an information centre for any paediatric medication questions: We offer up to date information on medication choice, identification, dosing, adverse effects and interactions.
  • Management of poisoning cases

We offer advice for both healthcare professionals and the public with regard to the management of poisoning cases.

  • We prepare medication that do not have paediatric liquid formulations.

Medicines Information

  • The Gertrude’s pharmacy at Muthaiga is a World Health Organization (WHO) certified Medicines and Poisons Information Centre that supports clinicians at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital and indeed other hospitals as well as the public with information to support management of situations of accidental or other forms of poisoning.
Gertrude’s Branded Medicines

  • The pharmacy department has contracted a reputable pharmaceutical manufacturer in the United Kingdom (Britain) to manufacture some products for the hospital.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

  • The Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital pharmacy department has been recognized regionally for implementation of an effective antimicrobial stewardship program. This program has over the years improved the responsible use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics) and indeed reduced their use for conditions that don’t require antimicrobial treatment.

Admission & Eligibility

At Gertrude’s Hospital, a children’s facility, only patients who are below 18 years old are eligible for admission as inpatients. Admission is only based on a child’s medical needs at the time they are being admitted.

Once admitted, the patients are placed under the care of an appropriate and experienced private consultant.

Casualty

This admission follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case and the doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.

Satellite Clinics

This admission almost follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case. But in this case, the patients visits one of the Gertrude’s Hospital’s Satellite Clinics and the doctor from the clinic feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.

The patient is referred to the satellite clinic and transport is organised to take the patient to Gertrude’s Main Hospital. A bed is prepared to make the admission smooth.

Emergency

This admission does not follow the normal procedure in an Emergency case and the patient is very serious and doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation, the patient is admitted directly to the ward or ICU depending on the status of the patient.
