Dr. Mailu is a consultant orthopedic surgeon who leads our subspecialized work in child orthopedics and sports medicine who has been at the Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital (GCH) since 2018. He completed his clinical fellowships in arthroscopy at Assiut University, Egypt in 2014 and Sports Medicine Fellowship from Alabama Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Alabama USA in 2015. He holds a superspecialty fellowship in peadiatric orthopedic surgery and has 15 years’ experience of working with children with deformities and disabilities. He has had varied short course training in the same with World Rugby, FIFA, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Sports Science Institute of South Africa Cape Town, Carle Sports Medicine/University of Illinois. At GCH, he runs the inpatient and outpatient sports medicine and pediatric orthopedic services. He leads a team that manages varied conditions including congenital deformities, clubfoot, spine deformities such as scoliosis, complex acquired deformities of hand and foot, multiple digits, shortened or angulated limbs. For sports injuries he manages all types of sports and sports like injuries such as ACL tears, PCL tears, recurrent knee cap dislocations, shoulder dislocations and rotator cuff injuries, hamstring and quad injuries. Mailu is highly experienced in minimally invasive orthopedic surgeries/arthroscopic procedures. Mailu serves as a medical officer with National Olympics committee of Kenya, Kenya Rugby Union(managing the highly successful Shujaa 7s national team and the 15s Simbas), Kenya Aquatics, Athletics Kenya and several other sports. He is an avid advocate of player health and injury prevention. Currently he is the President, Sports Medicine Society of Kenya. He is faculty at several university programs and AOTrauma and has had several high-level scientific papers at national and international conferences. He chairs the International Sports Medicine Conference for the region.

Admission & Eligibility
At Gertrude’s Hospital, a children’s facility, only patients who are below 18 years old are eligible for admission as inpatients. Admission is only based on a child’s medical needs at the time they are being admitted.
Once admitted, the patients are placed under the care of an appropriate and experienced private consultant.
Casualty
This admission follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case and the doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
Satellite Clinics
This admission almost follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case. But in this case, the patients visits one of the Gertrude’s Hospital’s Satellite Clinics and the doctor from the clinic feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
The patient is referred to the satellite clinic and transport is organised to take the patient to Gertrude’s Main Hospital. A bed is prepared to make the admission smooth.
Emergency
This admission does not follow the normal procedure in an Emergency case and the patient is very serious and doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation, the patient is admitted directly to the ward or ICU depending on the status of the patient.
