A multidisciplinary team consisting of paediatric endocrinologists, paediatric nurses with training in endocrinology, pathologists, clinical pharmacists, nurse counsellors, child psychologists, and developmental paediatricians provide endocrinology services addressing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
The overall aim of the program is to achieve early diagnosis, implement early treatment, and to improve the long-term quality of life of the patients/clients receiving care. The endocrinology program benefits from primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions.
Paediatric Endocrinology Conditions and Services
- Type 1 diabetes, which starts in childhood or adolescence (Juvenile), in which the body does not produce any insulin
- Type 2 diabetes, which starts in adolescence or adulthood, in which the insulin produced by the body does not work optimally.
- Adrenal gland disorders, in which the adrenal glands make either too much or too little hormone, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and Cushing’s Syndrome
- Growth disorders including delayed puberty, early puberty, growth hormone deficiency, short stature
- Hypoglycaemia, in which blood glucose levels are low
- Bone disorders including low bone density, rickets, osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), low calcium, high calcium, rickets.
- Disorders of Sexual development including ambiguous genitalia

Dr. Renson Mukhwana is a Consultant Paediatric endocrinologist at the Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital (GCH) since 2011 when he completed his training at PETCA – based at Gertrudes Childrens hospital, Nairobi, funded by World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) and supported by European Society of Paediatric endocrinology (ESPE). At GCH, he runs and outpatient diabetes and endocrine clinic and also attends to inpatient endocrine consults. Patients seen at the clinic include children with Diabetes, growth disorders, puberty disorders, Thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, born metabolic disorders, just to name a few. He has a special interest in growth disorders and bone disorders in children. He also has interests in metabolic disorders specifically Lysosomal disorders in which patients are managed in partnership with external funders. Dr. Mukhwana is a founder member and past president of African Society of Paediatric and adolescent endocrinology (ASPAE), he is also a member of ESPE and ISPAD (international Society for Paediatric and adolescent Diabetes) and sits on the planning committee of IMPE (International Meeting Of Paediatric Endocrinology) as ASPAE representative. Locally he is a founder member of PESK (Paediatric endocrine society of Kenya), and also a member of Kenya Paediatric Association (KPA). Outside the work environment Dr Mukhwana likes small scale farming and enjoys road drives.

Admission & Eligibility
At Gertrude’s Hospital, a children’s facility, only patients who are below 18 years old are eligible for admission as inpatients. Admission is only based on a child’s medical needs at the time they are being admitted.
Once admitted, the patients are placed under the care of an appropriate and experienced private consultant.
Casualty
This admission follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case and the doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
Satellite Clinics
This admission almost follows the normal procedure whereby a patient comes to Gertrude’s Hospital as an outpatient case. But in this case, the patients visits one of the Gertrude’s Hospital’s Satellite Clinics and the doctor from the clinic feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation.
The patient is referred to the satellite clinic and transport is organised to take the patient to Gertrude’s Main Hospital. A bed is prepared to make the admission smooth.
Emergency
This admission does not follow the normal procedure in an Emergency case and the patient is very serious and doctor feels that it will be in the best interest of the patient’s health to be admitted for further treatment and observation, the patient is admitted directly to the ward or ICU depending on the status of the patient.
