International Workshop on Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety
July 5th to July 6th, 2012

Workshop Summary

This is a stimulating and highly interactive programme for hospital board members and senior executives in hospitals and Healthcare Institutions

The workshop targets teams of a minimum of two members and a maximum of five from hospitals and healthcare institutions in the East Africa Region. The teams will comprise of Board members, Chief Executive Officers, Operating Officers, Chief Physicians, Medical Directors, Directors of Nursing and other quality champions.

The aims of the workshop are to equip participants to:-

1. Adopt an action focussed approach to strengthening leadership and ensure hospital governance systems that promote quality and patient safety

2. Identify the principles of building a quality & safety strategy and supporting business case for quality and patient safety, with efficient use of organizational resources

3. Identification of a range of improvement projects and techniques

4. Identify and prepare leaders in the quality agenda and strategies for staff and patient engagement into the process

5. Commit to an improvement programme which sets specific organizational objectives and plans to ensure successful corporate and clinical governance

Key questions for Boards and Managers:

1. Does your board know what it will take to deliver high quality & safe care, and what actions are required to achieve excellent clinical governance in a changing world?

2. Is your Board and Management looking to skilfully use quality data to strengthen clinical governance?

3. How can your board more effectively engage with clinical staff and patients in your quality and safety agenda?

4. How will your board and senior team handle and learn from a serious and high profile adverse events?

5. Can we link quality, safety, satisfaction, and cost issues into strategy and an effective operating plan?

6. How can your board and senior management team have a significant impact on improving quality whilst maintaining optimum performance?

Workshop Facilitators

The workshop facilitators are highly experienced in corporate and clinical governance, risk management and patient safety. The workshop content is based on international research and utilises a range of contemporary health care improvement methodologies and techniques.

Facilitators' Profile
Mrs Susan Hooton, OBE, RSCN, RGN, BSc (Hons) Nursing, MA Education, PG (Dip) Research

Sue is a highly experienced and dedicated adult and children's nurse with a national profile of influencing professional practice and leading a range of practice and education initiatives in nursing services. Sue possesses a proven track record of working across different sectors which include NHS provider organisations as well as being a long standing Trustee for a national children's charity. Previously Sue has held senior posts with the national regulatory board for nursing, the NHS Northwest Strategic Health Authority as well as senior posts in higher education.

In 2009, Sue was awarded an OBE for services to Nursing in 2009. This recognised work undertaken at Gertrude's children's Hospital where Sue worked with senior staff to implement a quality assurance system and successfully taught a degree programme for Kenyan children's nurses who graduated in 2010.

More recently, Sue won a Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholarship which enabled her to undertake Improvement Advisor training with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, USA, which she completed in July 2011 and commenced an Improvement Advisor post with the Advancing Quality Alliance (AQuA) in the North West of England.

Dr Colin Dale, RN, RNT, MA (Applied Psychology), Dip. (Management Studies), PhD.

Dr Colin Dale is the Chief Executive of Caring Solutions (UK) Ltd a mental health consultancy company based in the North West of England which carries out national, regional and local health care projects throughout the UK. He is the Joint Violence Project Manager for the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU) and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire. Colin has led Health Service projects at the Department of Health and has acted as adviser to the National Patient Safety Agency (UK). Since then he has led and reviewed a series of independent investigations into Serious Untoward Investigations on behalf of four of the ten Strategic Health Authorities in England. He is currently the Vice Chairman of a NHS mental health foundation trust and has functioned as an executive Director of Nursing with three previous NHS Trusts for a period spanning 11 years. He continues to work on a freelance basis as an independent Nurse Consultant and expert witness, combining this work with research and writing.

Nicole Spieker, PhD,

Nicole is Program Director Quality of PharmAccess Foundation based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. PharmAccess improves access to quality basic health care including HIV/AIDS treatment and care in sub-Saharan Africa, through building sustainable health systems. She is responsible for the upgrading and continuous quality improvement of health care providers participating in PharmAccess health systems programs such as the Health Insurance Fund and the Medical Credit fund.

Under the SafeCare Initiative, PharmAccess together with COHSASA, South Africa, and JCI, USA,developed international quality standards for resource restricted settings to guide and measure continuous quality improvement. With these standards a system has been developed of graded recognition of quality improvement and accreditation of health care providers including HIV/AIDS treatment and Care.


The workshop will be conducted over two days between 9am and 4pm on both days.

Application forms may be accessed here and should be competed and submitted electronically. Only online applications will be accepted. Only those applications accompanied by registration payment will be accepted.

Workshop Fee

The total workshop fee is US$ 500 per participant. This will cover, course material, teas and lunches. The registration deadline is June 15, 2012 and acceptance will be on a first come basis. Participants will make their own travel, accommodation and insurance arrangements. An early bird discount of 10% will be given for payments done on or before May 31, 2012.

Cancellation Policy

Seventy five percent (75%) refund will be given for any cancellation before May 31, 2012. No refund will be given for cancelations after this date.

Workshop Requirements

1. All confirmed participants will be required to read in advance materials that will be sent prior to the workshop

2. All international participants are required to confirm and process visa and travel vaccination where applicable

3. A detailed information summary covering logistics, host city information, health and vaccination requirements among others will be sent to fully registered participants
